Joint technology and innovation projects were the focus of the Triple Helix meeting on November 23rd in Enschede. Representatives of the twin cities of Münster and Enschede, the universities of Münster and Twente, as well as the IHK Nord Westfalen and the Twente Board met to talk about joint technology and innovation activities and potential in the border region.

The focus was on the topic of Industry 4.0. The new Advanced Manufacturing Center and the “Fraunhofer Innovation Platform” at the University of Twente, which is also open to German companies, were also visited.

The visit made it clear how digitalization and automation can already affect production methods, especially in medium-sized “manufactories”. Co-bots, welding robots, metal 3D printing and the networking of all processes and data with the help of 5G technology were shown and discussed.

Sebastian van Deel, Head of the Digitalization, Industry and International Division, emphasized: “The Fraunhofer Innovation Platform in Twente is a treasure trove of knowledge that has not yet been exploited by the North Westphalian industry, but makes a significant contribution to strengthening the cross-border innovation and technology region “So far, very few German companies have been involved in research and development at the University of Twente, even though access to the university landscape in the Netherlands is comparatively easy.

Following the visit to the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform, it was agreed between all those involved to organize cross-border cooperation in the areas of Industry 4.0 as well as energy and medical technology even more effectively and effectively. In this context, initial successes were also pointed out. The good cooperation between the two regions is now being recognized at EU level and the first EU-funded projects in the area of circular economy and battery research have already been approved.
