HYDROGEN PRACTICE DAY AT THE HERTEN USER CENTER A COMPLETE SUCCESS!

As part of the "Hydrogen Week", the third "Hydrogen Practice Day" took place at the Herten User Center on 19 June 2024. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., a total of 170 schoolchildren had the opportunity to find out all about hydrogen and its many possible applications.

The event was held at nine different stations, which were supervised by experienced specialists and experts from our partners h2-netzwerk-ruhr e.V. and h2herten. Most of the stations were organized by companies from the hydrogen sector. They benefited from the opportunity to present themselves and their work. The students were able to gain an insight into the various fields of activity and the broad spectrum of the hydrogen industry.

A particular highlight was the hydrogen filling station. Here, the participants were given a detailed insight into the functioning and operation of such a filling station. The students witnessed the busy operation of the filling station and saw that hydrogen is not just a topic for the future in the Emscher-Lippe region, but has already become part of everyday life. Practical demonstrations conveyed technical knowledge and explained how a hydrogen filling station works.

The station with three different hydrogen vehicles was also impressive. In addition to two fuel cell cars, there was also a waste collection vehicle. The pupils were able to see the vehicles up close and take a seat in them.  Some pupils from the OstVest vocational college were even given the opportunity to work on the environmentally friendly vehicles themselves.

In the discussions with the experts, it became clear that hydrogen is needed for climate neutrality, at least in heavy goods transport. The possibilities for generating renewable electricity in Germany will not be sufficient to charge all trucks with electricity.

Another important aspect of the practical day was career guidance. At this station, the students had the opportunity to find out about training opportunities and career paths in the hydrogen industry. The careers advisors were on hand to answer participants' questions and provide valuable tips for entering this promising sector.

Pupils from the schools Josef-Albers-Gymnasium Bottrop, Städtische Gymnasium Herten, Berufskolleg OstVest Datteln, Maristenschule, Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium and Marie-Curie-Gymnasium were not only able to expand their knowledge of hydrogen, but also make valuable contacts and be inspired.

The philosopher and writer Eva von Redecker did not want to miss this event during her time as a metropolitan writer in the Ruhr area and took many impressions with her. As in previous years, the contacts between the exhibitors and the organizers were constructive and new ideas for the Emscher-Lippe hydrogen region emerged.

Many thanks to everyone involved, especially the companies KWS Energy Knowledge eG, Gelsenwasser AG, HYCON GmbH, Concord Blue Engineering GmbH and TÜV Rheinland, as well as the careers advisors from the Employment Agency, who made this day possible with their commitment and expertise.

We are already looking forward to the next event and to continuing to contribute to promoting the next generation of skilled workers in hydrogen technology.
