SMART GUT advances OnePlanet’s ingestible Sensor Pill—the first device for direct in‑vivo inflammation measurements in the human GI tract—from research tool to market‑ready healthcare solution in the Netherlands and Germany. The project will validate clinical applicability in patients with chronic intestinal inflammation and design a cross‑border implementation strategy aligned with both countries’ regulatory and clinical practices. A first prototype enabling direct Bluetooth communication between the Sensor Pill and a smartphone will be realized to improve usability and market readiness. In parallel, the consortium will develop a targeted Gut Microbiome Profiling Kit for faecal diagnostics of intestinal inflammation. Sensor Pill data and microbiome profiles will feed a Digital Twin of the GI tract to localize inflammation and microbial dysbiosis. The cross‑border consortium combines medical technology, digital health and biotech expertise from academic institutions, SMEs and patient organizations. Lead partner: Stichting IMEC Nederland. Total planned project costs: €2,621,409.70.

Consortium partners:

  • Germany: airCode UG (haftungsbeschränkt); Deutsche Rheuma‑Liga Bundesverband e. V.; Universität Münster.
  • Netherlands: Crohn & Colitis NL; Oost NL; Predica Diagnostics B.V.; Radboud universitair medisch centrum / Radboudumc; (Lead partner) Stichting IMEC Nederland.
