Orion
ORION develops a CE-marking-ready robotic system that uses magnetic steering, artificial intelligence and image guidance to safely navigate chronic total occlusions in blood vessels.
ORION focuses on chronic total occlusions, severe vascular blockages that are currently treated by manually pushing stiff guidewires through calcified vessels. This conventional approach can lead to perforations and failed procedures. ORION develops a compact bedside robotic system that magnetically steers the tip of a flexible microcatheter along an artificial-intelligence-generated three-dimensional path, using a combination of pre-operative CT images and live X-ray images for continuous visual guidance.
The project aims to raise the technology readiness level from TRL 5 to TRL 7 within 36 months, including validation in 20 large-scale preclinical CTO models and preparation of a CE-compliant technical dossier under ISO 13485. For Tech.Land, ORION is a strong Health & MedTech project because it combines clinical relevance, robotics, artificial intelligence, imaging and hightech product development in a Dutch-German consortium.
Projectcosts € 2.771.557,60; EFRE/EFRO-funding € 1.192.967,78.
