Battery Competence Cluster - NL: Open Call for Papers on Technology Development for Circular Batteries

NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and Battery Competence Cluster - NL (BCC-NL) have launched a new call for proposals to accelerate fundamental research in circular battery technologies, a key pillar in the Dutch battery innovation strategy and energy transition.

🔋 Batteries are playing an increasingly important role in the transition to sustainable energy, from powering electric vehicles to storing solar and wind energy. This call is part of the National Growth Fund programme “Material Independence & Circular Batteries”, which received €158 million in funding in 2023.

🔍 Focus areas:
This €14.44 million call targets three critical technology domains:
1. Material recovery from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries (€1.44M)
2. Development of sodium-ion batteries (€8M)
3. Bulk battery technologies for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) (€5M)
Only one project will be awarded per domain.

🤝 Building strong consortia:
To maximise impact, collaboration is essential. The call requires interdisciplinary consortia of researchers and societal/private partners.
👉 A collaborative workshop to help form consortia will be held on 21 May 2025. Attendance is mandatory for main applicants and strongly recommended for co-applicants and partners.

🗓 Key dates:
- 15 May: registration deadline for workshop
- 21 May: consortium-building workshop
- 16 September (14:00 CEST): proposal submission deadline
