Our Key Takeaways from the World Hydrogen Summit 2026

For years, the European hydrogen discussion has been dominated by grand strategy papers, distant targets, and theoretical pilot projects. But if you want to see what the energy transition looks like in practice right now, you only need to look at one place: the Dutch-German border.

We recently returned from the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Rotterdam, and we are still energized by the momentum. Surrounded by 15,000 professionals from 77 countries, we weren't just part of a trade show—we came to prove that our cross-border mission creates real, tangible impact.

The biggest proof? This summit was the backdrop for a massive structural milestone: a unique Dutch-German consortium officially signed an agreement to connect the Twente region directly to the German hydrogen network near Nordhorn.

From Strategy to Signature: The Nordhorn-Twente Connection

What started as a strategic cross-border mission of ours to Brussels has officially evolved into a concrete project with massive implications for our region and beyond.

For our industrial partners facing immense pressure to decarbonize energy-intensive operations, this agreement provides a pragmatic, fast-tracked solution. Instead of waiting on decades of new infrastructure to be built from scratch, the consortium will repurpose an existing natural gas pipeline from Cogas. This infrastructure will transport hydrogen directly to companies in Twente—especially benefiting energy-intensive industries that currently rely on natural gas.

Our Roadmap to 2030 is set:

  • 2026: Complete a joint regional assessment to identify optimal hydrogen supply areas in Twente.

  • 2027: Explore financing options and prepare for a definitive investment decision on regional hydrogen infrastructure.

  • Before 2030: Accelerate development to enable the first physical industrial hydrogen offtake.

High-Level Policy Validation and On-Stage Leadership

The cross-border ecosystem we are building together didn't just capture the attention of industry; it commanded the attention of top-tier policymakers.

A massive highlight for our team was an official visit to our stand by Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Rouenhoff from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWK). His visit strongly underscored how seriously the work being done across Emscher-Lippe, Münsterland, Gelderland, and Overijssel is being taken at the highest policy levels.

We also brought our region's practical insights directly to the big stage. In the German Pavilion, our own Pia Aleithe represented TECH.LAND on the "Hydrogen Made in NRW" panel. By sharing real infrastructure stories from our border, she gave international investors and partners a concrete picture of exactly what this region is building.

The Power of Our Triple-Helix Alliance

This breakthrough is the direct result of a powerful coalition of our Dutch and German partners across politics, business, and science:

  • Municipalities & Public Sector: Gemeente Enschede, Almelo, Hengelo, Oldenzaal, and the Provincie Overijssel.

  • Industry & Grid Operators: Thyssengas, Cogas, and the Industrie- und Handelskammer Nord Westfalen.

  • Innovation & Clusters: Oost NL, H2HUB Twente, Twenteboard, Energiestrategie Twente (RES Twente), and our team here at TECH.LAND.

Together, these partners demonstrate what can be achieved when we align shared ambitions across borders.

Beyond the Pipeline: What Lies Ahead

While the big announcements grabbed the headlines, some of the most valuable work happened quietly between the sessions at Booth 2G90. We watched German and Dutch companies discover each other’s supply chains, numerous new partners express interest in joining our TECH.LAND network of over 100 partners, and a bright new generation of graduates ask how they can build their careers within our ecosystem.

This milestone is about much more than building pipelines. It is about economic strength, accelerating innovation, and firmly positioning the TECH.LAND area as a forward-looking industrial powerhouse in a European context.

We are incredibly proud of this collective achievement. Let’s keep transforming borders into connections!
