North Westphalia: A Central Hub for the Rise of Hydrogen in Europe, in Close Cooperation with Eastern Netherlands
A position paper titled H2-Ramp Up in Technology and User Region North Westphalia was published earlier this week, offering strategic insights for businesses and knowledge institutions within the Dutch-German TECH.LAND area.
The transition to a sustainable and climate-neutral future is increasingly driven by cutting-edge technologies like hydrogen. In the Dutch-German TECH.LAND area, hydrogen plays a crucial role as an innovative theme, and the recent publication of a position paper for the district of Münster emphasizes the importance of this energy carrier once again. With a clear vision and practical recommendations, the document aims to position the North Westphalia region as a central hub for the rise of hydrogen in Europe, covering sectors like Industry, Heat, Mobility, and International Collaboration.
North Westphalia, strategically located between wind-rich energy areas and industrial hubs along the Rhine and Ruhr, is perfectly positioned to play a central role in the hydrogen infrastructure. The recommendations in the position paper, developed by the H₂ Working Group under the leadership of the Regierungsbezirk Münster and the IHK Nord Westfalen, align with the goals of the TECH.LAND Hydrogen cluster. The focus is on expanding infrastructure, reducing hydrogen costs, and strengthening international collaborations—especially with the Eastern Netherlands, a key partner in the Dutch-German TECH.LAND region.
Why is this important for TECH.LAND?
Within the TECH.LAND program, themes like sustainable energy and hydrogen are strong pillars for cross-border collaboration and innovation, with the aim of becoming one of the leading innovative regions in Europe. Hydrogen offers countless opportunities for developing a circular and sustainable economy. By combining the strengths of the Eastern Netherlands and North Westphalia, TECH.LAND facilitates an ecosystem where new technologies can be developed and applied more quickly by companies and knowledge institutions. This position paper strengthens cooperation between industrial and academic players on both sides of the border, enabling the necessary energy transition for a sustainable and climate-neutral future.
