Cross-Border Hydrogen Cluster Kick-off marks a Milestone in the TECH.LAND Program

A significant step forward in the strategic cross-border collaboration of the TECH.LAND initiative, as the regions of Oost NL, Emscher-Lippe, and Münsterland (North Westphalia) come together in Rotterdam at the leading international trade fair World Hydrogen Summit to introduce a newly-formed joint hydrogen cluster. This cluster is part of a wider effort to foster innovation and cross-border collaboration, transcending national boundaries to address pressing global challenges.

Eastern Netherlands, Emscher-Lippe and Münsterland are situated in the heart of Europe and have a long history of cross-border activities. United by a shared vision of leveraging hydrogen as a key element in combating climate change and transforming our energy system, hydrogen is a key area of collaboration under the TECH.LAND umbrella.

In the cross-border region, more than 100 companies, knowledge institutes, and government institutes are working together on projects to decarbonise energy, transport and heating. High profile flagship projects such as ‘Bioenergiepark Saerbeck’, ’GldH2’ or ‘h2herten’ and the establishment of industrial hydrogen clusters like the ‘Klimahafen Gelsenkirchen’, ‘H2Hub Twente’ and ‘Connectr Energy Innovation’ in cooperation with key industry players demonstrate real-world hydrogen applications and push the technologies forward. Some of these companies, such as 2G Energy AG, Accelera by Cummins, BP, Concord Blue, Greenteam Twente, Haver & Boecker OHG, Hengst SE, HyET, HYGEAR, Rosen, Uniper, VoltH2 and many others are also present at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.

The initiative underlines the importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling complex challenges. By pooling resources, expertise and talents, the regions aim to create a more attractive environment in which to work and live and to promote the exchange of knowledge and skills between educational institutions and businesses on both sides of the border. The hydrogen cluster is coordinated by Wirtschaftsförderung Kreis Coesfeld, Oost NL, WIN Emscher-Lippe and supported by Technologieförderung Münster.

Background Information:
• TECH.LAND: On 21 May 2021, IHK Nord Westfalen, Twente Board and Oost NL along other initial partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise their collaboration and drive forward their joint efforts. This agreement laid the groundwork for cross-border initiatives to promote common goals.
• Cross-Border Strategy: An addendum to the MoU outlines long-term ambitions, objectives and activities for the coming years, focusing on key areas of cooperation.
• Past milestones: Joint events, representation of the cross-border region on trade fairs and congresses, establishment of international relations, application for large-volume funding projects demonstrate the commitment to collaboration and innovation.
