60 Kilometers, One Inspiring Realization: What Happens When We Share Our Strengths?

Why do two thriving, neighboring regions separated by less than an hour’s drive still tend to operate in their own separate innovation bubbles?
This was the fascinating question that brought a wonderful group of corporate leaders, academic experts, and policymakers together for the recent TECH.LAND "Talents of the Future" Cross-Border Bike Tour through Münsterland and Twente. Covering 60 sunny kilometers on two wheels, the tour wasn't just about connecting great people, it was about exploring how we can blend the best of our two regional cultures to nurture, attract, and retain the workforce of tomorrow.
What we discovered along the way is that both sides of the border have developed incredible, unique strengths that complement each other perfectly when it comes to developing the Talents of the Future.

The German Model: Deep Roots and Strong Loyalty

Our first stops at the fantastic facilities of Möller Chemie and 2G Energy AG highlighted the immense power of the German industrial approach. Here, companies invest deeply and wholeheartedly in vocational training and long-term partnerships with local universities.
This creates a beautiful bedrock of community, deep roots, and real employee loyalty. While these localized talent pipelines are highly specialized and dedicated, the growing demand for tech talent means these networks are facing new pressures. It got us thinking: how can we help these fantastic companies expand their reach?

The Twente Approach: A Warm Welcome for Global Talent

Crossing into the Netherlands, we were welcomed by the team at the innovation powerhouse Demcon, where we saw a different, equally inspiring philosophy in action.
The Twente ecosystem is consciously designed to attract global minds, boasting an impressive international workforce of around 15%. With tight, energetic feedback loops between industry and academia, they have built a dynamic hub designed to bring fresh, global perspectives right to the region's doorstep.

Two Models, One Resilient Cross- Border Region

The most beautiful takeaway from our day on two wheels is that neither model is superior, but together, they are far more resilient than either could ever be alone.
When businesses, universities, and policymakers stop viewing the border as a boundary and start treating it as a shared asset, incredible things happen. We open up a world where the next brilliant hire doesn't have to stop at the border. Neither does the next groundbreaking R&D partnership, or the next collaborative policy conversation.
This spirit of open collaboration is exactly what we strive for across the entire TECH.LAND initiative. Whether we are connecting talent pools on a bike ride or physically linking cross-border energy infrastructure, like our recent milestone agreement to connect the Twente region to the German hydrogen network, our goal is always to bring people together for a sustainable future.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Network

This unforgettable 60-kilometer journey was made possible by our wonderful organizing partners: the IHK Nord Westfalen, the Bezirksregierung Münster, and the Provincie Overijssel.
We want to send a huge thank you to Möller Chemie, 2G Energy AG, and Demcon for opening their doors, sharing their bright ideas, and welcoming us so warmly. Most of all, thank you to everyone who rode alongside us! Together, we are transforming borders into lasting connections
